Classy Chebet seals 5000m Commonwealth victory

Chebet, the 2018 World Junior Champion and reigning African champion was the most comfortable of the trio, eventually breaking off down the home stretch, leaving McColgan for dead as she strode to victory in 14 minutes 38.21 seconds. McColgan was four seconds adrift, taking the silver in 14:42.14 as Busienei took bronze in 14:48.24.

Beatrice Chebet unleashed a devastating kick with 220 meters to go, racing to Kenya’s second gold medal on Sunday night with victory in the women’s 5000m final at the Commonwealth Games.

Scotland’s Eilish McColgan took to the front of the field, dominating the pace with the Kenyan duo of Selah Busienei and Chebet staying in touch.

And it looked as if McColgan would be out to complete the double, having won the women’s 10000m gold on Wednesday but it wasn’t to be as Busienei and Chebet declared their intent with about 1000m to go.
