Ghana bow out of World Cup contention

Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended with a 2-1 defeat to Portugal, a result that saw both sides crash out of the tournament as they both needed to post big wins to advance to the next round of competition from Group G. Unfortunately, that high scoring contest never took off for a lot of reasons, Ghana were hit by off-pitch problems while Portugal were blighted by injury.

Portugal went ahead when Ghana defender John Boye misdirected Miguel Veloso’s cross from the left past his keeper Fatawu Dauda to give Portugal the lead on 31 minutes, a lead that they held heading into half time.

The Black Stars showed a lot more purpose in the second half, Kwadwo Asamoah’s delivery met by  Asamoah Gyan who headed home the equalizer. The goal gave Ghana renewed hope and they began to press home for the goal that would hand them a late shot at qualification. Their hopes were ended in the 80th minute, when Jonathan Mensah’s botched clearance was mishandled by Dauda on the line. The ball rolled invitingly for Ronaldo, who fired home.

Germany won this group  with seven points, after defeating the United States, 1-0, in Recife. The United States joined the Germans in the Round of 16 with four points, ahead of Portugal (4 points) and Ghana (1 point).
