Germany wins 2014 World Cup

Germany on Sunday lifted the world Cup trophy for the fourth time after defeating Argentina in the finals courtesy of an extra time goal by Mario Gotze at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

This was a historic win for the united Germany who last lifted the title in 1990 putting them just but a title behind Brazil’s record tally of five.

It was an evening of balanced chances for either side   with the winner having to be decided in the second period of extra time after a barren regulation time.

Argentina will however have some moments of regret afterwards as they failed to burrow some clean chances especially in the first half when striker Gonzalo Higuain shot wide from close range following a gifted back header by Germany’s Toni Kroos’.

Germany too had their moment in the first half when Howedes was denied by the woodwork just seconds before halftime.

Gotze’s goal in the 112th minute was a beautiful volley, technically executed by the 22 year old who made good use of Schurrle’s well weighted ball, chesting it with precision before firing a powerful volley past the Argentina keeper for the winner.
