Despite not progressing past the first round of the African Junior tennis Championships which is ongoing at the Nairobi club tennis court and the Public Service courts, Sofiya Gulam was pleased in getting an opportunity to represent Kenya.

Gulam who is in grade 10 at the International school of Kenya was delighted with her performance in the championships which are being held in Kenya for the first time.

“I am happy with what I have achieved so far, my target was to make it to the quarters to say the least.  Going by the opponents I have faced I am happy with my performance.” She said.

“This was an important tournament held in Kenya, everyone was happy that we got to host the championships. As a player it is important to play with who is who in the world of tennis.” She continues.

Gulam teamed up with Stephanie Mbaya to take on Egyptian duo of Hana Martagy and Sandra Samir where they lost 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.

“Playing the best in Africa was a special occasion for me. They are the best and we gave our all, the match prepared us for future encounters.” She said.

Gulam has been playing tennis ever since she was a kid and is not about to abandon the sport any time soon. She intends to play more international matches which will help her gain the necessary experience.
