Caroline Oduor successfully defended her title as the 2013 Real Insurance Kenya Open Tennis championships came to an end at the Nairobi club on Sunday evening.Oduor needed 6-7,(4) 6-2, 6-2 to overcome promising youngster Shufaa Changawa also from Kenya in an entertaining final.

In the process, the experienced Kenyan pocketed Ksh 90,000 as prize money that accompanied the 2013 edition.

Oduor who beat Evelyn Otula in last year’s final booked her place in the last two with a 2-1 win over first rising Stephanie Mbaya in the semi finals.

“The finals were hard as I expected it. She played very well and I think I just survived on the court,” said Oduor, of her opponent.

Oduor won the first set 6-3 but Mbaya responded positively to take the second 7-6 before losing the last set 5-7 to the defending champ.

On her route to the finals Changawa registered the biggest upset of the tournament beating last year’s finalist Otula.

Changawa who missed last year’s edition whipped Otula 2-0 (6-4, 6-3) to book a final berth with Oduor on Sunday at the Nairobi Club.

In the men’s finals, Uganda’s Duncan Mugabe defeated Jean Claude Gasigwa of Rwanda 6-7,(4) 6-3,6-2 .

The Uganda who was also the champion in 2011 lost in last year’s final to Zambia’s Edgar Kazembe . He defeated the Zambian in the semis.

The Ugandan pocketed Ksh 100,000 prize money.
