Kenya’s Stephanie Mbaya showed great resilience to qualify for the quarter finals of the Africa Junior Tennis championships warm up tournament currently ongoing at the Nairobi club.

By end of business on Wednesday, three Kenyans Chizi Mutsumi, Mbaya Stephanie and Aahil Salem  had qualified for the second round of the championships.

Kenya entered 12 players for the African championship that will welcome 32 nations represented by over 127 players. This being the first time for the region to host the competition.

In the second round matches played on Thursday afternoon, Mbaya defeated Nigeria’s Aderotimi Adetundji  6-1 ,6-1 in a match played under a wet Murram court after rains had interrupted the mind morning matches.

The 15 year old Mbaya was elated after qualifying for the quarters saying she enjoyed every bit of the match and is looking forward to the challenge that comes with a tournament of such high quality.

“The wet court helped me enjoy playing more today.  It was a good match with an equally great opponent. I need to work on my footwork and back hand which were not my strong points today.” She said.

“This is arguably the greatest event hosted in this region of the continent. It is a great pleasure to be part of it. I know I will face stiffer challenge when the tournament matures but I am ready for any eventuality.” She said.

The form two Loreto High School student took part in the AJC under 18 championships held in South Africa in January where she was eliminated in the second round.

“My target is to give my all in any in the tournament regardless of whom I will face. We have the 37th ranked Sandra Samir of Egypt in this tournament. I could love to play her  in the championships or even in the finals.” Said Mbaya who is ranked 1200 in the world.

The other Kenyans Chizi and Salem were scheduled to take to the court later on Thursday evening.
