Kenya Tennis Coach Evelyn Otula says her team targets to post better results during this year’s Africa Junior Tennis Championships to be hosted in Kenya for the very first time.

Otula who serves as both the team manager and coach says her team has set targets to surpass the poor show by Kenyans in recent past.

“We have obligations to bring fans back to watch the locals in the courts. We are aware of opposition from South, West and North Africa countries but we are optimistic that our players will go past the quarter finals.” She said

“Currently  we have to wait for the draws and see which players are coming from other countries then you can see where we are but our target is to reach the semi finals in the least. If we can win, it will be special to us.” She adds.

Otula’s remarks were echoed by tournament director Francis Mutuku who said the Kenyan players will have an advantage since they are used to the Murram courts in the country as opposed to clay or carpeted courts.

“That is why we shall be having a warm up tournament before the main championships. We expect Kenyans to capitalize on the advantage.” stated Mutuku.

The players will have a chance to gauge their strength between 2-3rd March and a week later (March 12-17th) in build up tournaments. The main tournament starts on 18-23 of March.

Kenya will bank on the performances of Stephanie Mbaya, Abigael Tate- Hart, Sheila Kotecha and Sophia Gulam whom Otula tipped to perform better in the tournament.

Other players expected to carry high the Kenyan flag are, Olivier Kigoth and Joseph Garo in the boys (under 16), Chizi Muthomi and Membo Waithera in the girls (under 16). Aahil Saleh, Lefteris Ngugi will join Kotecha and Gulam in the boys (under 14) which will also have Tonia Kubai, Faith Nyabera and Mercy Wangui in the girls category.
