Sheil Kotecha, Josephat Garo and Stephanie Mbaya exposed inspirational form in the opening round of the African Junior Championships main tournament which started at the Nairobi tennis club courts and the Public Service club on Monday.

Mbaya who made it to the quarter finals in the warm up tournament held last week picked up from where she left easily defeating Olive Tuyisenge of Rwanda 6-1, 6-0 mid Monday morning.

In the boys Under -16 categories, Garo defeated Ethiopia’s Mintesinot Margia 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the next round.

In the Under 14 category, Kotecha overcame an early tide to see off Yabsira Kabede of Ethiopia 6-4, 6-0  to advance to the next round.

The not so lucky lot of the day included Abigail  Tate –Harte who lost to Georgina Kaindoah of Tanzania.

In the U-14 category Lefteris Ngugi could not match the form of Egyptian Abduaah Hossam who won the match 6-1,6-0.

Kenya’s Coach Evelyn Otula said the home players were made to play for positions most of them having been eliminated during the warm up matches.

“Kenya team plays for positions after losing out in the main draw. Only Mbaya (Girls U16) and Aahil Saleh (Boys U14) made it to the quarter finals stage of the warm up. Nevertheless we are happy with what we achieved for it was a learning experience.” Said the coach.

This is the first time the country is hosting the prestigious junior tennis championships which has attracted over 127 players from 32 participating nations.
