All Kenyan affair as Mbaya targets to shock champion

It will be an all Kenyan affair in the ladies’ tennis singles at the ongoing Real Insurance Kenya Open Tennis championship that enters the semis at the Nairobi club on Friday.

The four players led by defending champion Caroline Oduor will face each other with Oduor taking on first rising star Stephanie Mbaya in the first semis while last year’s finalist Evelyn Otula will play Shuffa Changawa in the other semis.

This performance of ladies is in contrast to the one posted by their men counterparts who were bundled out of the championships with the only hope Faizal Khan exiting in the semi final stage.

It’s is obvious the women’s title will remain in Nairobi since only Kenyans are in the final phase.

16 year old Mbaya after defeating Tanzania’s Rehema Athumani 6-3, 6-2 was full of confidence saying that she is not scared of facing the defending champion in the semis.

“I think the defending champion Caroline Oduor will be under greater pressure facing me. I am much younger and hungry for victory. I have watched her play and will capitalize on her back hand which is weaker. I am looking forward to the match.” He said
