Quick facts about Nyayo Stadium

  1. Managed and maintained by the Sports Stadia Management Board now called Sports Kenya
  2. It is home to several federations including Football Kenya Federation , Kenya Basketball Federation , Kenya Handball Federation ,Kenya Volleyball Federation  who have their headquarters at the Nyayo National Stadium.
  3. The stadium’s football pitch is of FIFA approved standard size
  4. In 2009, the Nyayo national stadium was renamed the Coca Cola National Stadium after the Coca Cola won naming rights to the stadium; a deal worth $1.5million for a 3yr period. However 3 months down the line, the multinational withdrew from the contract following controversial  disagreements with the then minister of Sports Hellen Sambili.
  5. The stadium facilities are available for hire to the general public, Individual sports People, Educational Institutions, event organizers, Religious Organizations, NGOs etc

The Nyayo National stadium located near the CBD is the second largest stadium in Kenya. This Multi-Purpose Stadium comprises of a sports complex fitted with 30,000 seat capacities, an aquatic centre with an Olympic size pool, indoor gymnasium mostly used for Basketball matches, a running track as well as a volleyball and handball training court.

The Nyayo stadium was opened in 1983 with the vision of providing modern training facilities for the sports people of Kenya. The completion of Nyayo National stadium; then a state- of-the-art stadium by international standards, elevated Kenya to be recognized among nations equipped to host international games. Among the prestigious sports events held in this stadium include the 4th All African Games in 1987 and the 2010 Africa Championships in Athletics.  At present, the stadium is mostly used for football matches and is home to several national and international matches with notable football clubs in the Kenya Premier League such as AFC Leopards and Sofapaka who play their home matches here. 

Nyayo national stadium attracts hosts of large gathering s such as national holiday celebrations, political events, concerts, and religious crusades due to its largeness and ample parking. Similarly, the stadium’s swimming pool is opened to public and manned by trained life guards.
