The Mombasa Municipal Stadium is the main Stadium in Mombasa County and has several other uses apart from hosting Kenya Premier League Soccer Matches. The 10,000-capacity stadium is home to the Kenya Premier League Bandari F.C and also features other football tenants such as Coast Stars and Congo United.
Mombasa, where the stadium is located is the second largest city in Kenya, on the Kenyan Coast bordering the Indian Ocean and about 275 miles from Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi. Mombasa Municipal Stadium has nurtured quite a number of sporting careers not only in the region but also in the country as well as hosted many local and international events. Its multi-use status has seen the stadium play a pivotal role in primary and secondary school games as well as political meetings. Most local and international football matches are also played in the stadium.
In 2015, there was an outcry from the residents that the stadium was in a bad shape and needed a facelift. The home to SportPesa Premier League side, Bandari F.C, was later closed for about three months to lay down a modern tartan track in order to provide athletes with world class training equipment. The County government had earlier used KES 20 million to upgrade the venue when the County hosted the 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
