Kipchoge Keino Stadium info

Eldoret town is found in the western part of Kenya , in the Rift Valley - and is the administrative center of Uasin Gishu . Eldoret lies at about 2100-2700 meters above sea level making this town an ideal place for high altitude training. In fact the international association of athletics federation (IAAF) High Altitude Training Center for Kenyan and international athletes is based here.

The Kipchoge Keino stadium is nestled in the athletics rich Eldoret County and named after renowned athlete Kipchoge “Kip” Keino who was a two time Olympic gold medalist in his time. Now retired from the race track, Kipchoge Keino serves as the chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee (KOC) and continues to inspire upcoming athletes to become an athletic force to reckon with.

The Kipchoge Keino stadium is designed as a multi-use stadium has a capacity of 10,000 people and is mostly used for football matches. The Rivatex and Eldoret KCC football teams had used this stadium for their matches. Currently, there are no Eldoret teams playing in the Kenya Premier League. Athletes also used the facility to train and in some occasions it was used to host athletic meetings. 

Back in 2007 Kipchoge Keino stadium was closed for renovations and upgrades on its run down state as one of Kenya’s Vision2030 flagship projects. A sum of Sh100 million was allocated by the Kenya government to this end. To date, renovation works at the stadium remains work in progress despite the completion deadline of September 2011 being overdue. On completion, the Kipchoge Keino Stadium should have an international standard athletic track, new terraces, changing rooms, and a pavilion.
