For Kenya, Wanyonyi’s triumph marked the first men’s gold in Tokyo, adding to a glittering medal haul.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi etched his name into the history books with a dazzling run in the men’s 800m final, storming to victory in 1:41.86 to smash the Championship Record in Tokyo. It was a race that will be remembered for its razor-thin margins.

From the gun, Wanyonyi took command, executing a display of confidence and composure that resembled the pressure of a world final. Yet, as the field stretched into the last 100 meters, the Kenyan found himself under siege, his stride under threat from the charging duo of Djamel Sedjati and Marco Arop. Digging deep, Wanyonyi held firm, leaning at the line to edge out Sedjati in a breathtaking finish.

Sedjati crossed in 1:41.90—his season’s best—while Canada’s Arop, the reigning world champion, clocked 1:41.95 (SB) for bronze.

The brilliance didn’t end there. The final became a showcase of national milestones: Ireland’s Cian McPhillips broke his country’s record with 1:42.15, Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui delivered a season’s best 1:42.21, and Britain’s Max Burgin posted a lifetime best of 1:42.29. Jamaica’s Navasky Anderson powered to a national record of 1:42.76, while Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela wrapped up the field in a swift 1:42.77.

For Kenya, Wanyonyi’s triumph marked the first men’s gold in Tokyo, adding to a glittering medal haul. With Beatrice Chebet’s double, Peres Jepchirchir’s marathon brilliance, Faith Cherotich’s steeplechase crown, and Faith Kipyegon’s 1500m mastery, Kenya sits proudly in second place on the medal table, trailing only the USA with a hope of more medals  on the final day in the women’s 800m finals.
