Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi has capped another remarkable season by finishing 2026 as the highest-ranked 800m athlete in the world, underlining his continued dominance over the two-lap distance.

As of September 25, Wanyonyi leads the global rankings with 1,460 points, ahead of Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati on 1,438 and Canada’s Marco Arop on 1,414.

American duo Brandon Miller and Cooper Lutkenhaus complete the top five with 1,370 and 1,366 points respectively.

Another Diamond League crown

Wanyonyi's season was further decorated by another Diamond League title, his fourth consecutive series crown.

At the Diamond League Final in Brussels, the Kenyan produced a commanding performance to win the 800m in 1:41.80, finishing ahead of Sedjati, who clocked 1:42.71, while France's Yanis Meziane was third in 1:42.87.

The victory continued an extraordinary run in the Diamond League. Wanyonyi had already won the previous three 800m finals and entered the Brussels showdown as one of the defining athletes of the discipline.

His 2026 campaign also included a notable victory over Arop and Sedjati in Lausanne, where he ran 1:42.19 to claim his first Diamond League 800m win of the season. (

Wanyonyi's rise has been built on remarkable consistency at the highest level.

The Kenyan is the reigning Olympic and world 800m champion, having won Olympic gold in Paris in 2024 before successfully defending his global status at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. His world title came in a championship record of 1:41.86.

He also remains one of the fastest men ever over 800m, with a personal best of 1:41.11, while his 2026 season included a world record over 1000m in Monaco.
