Upsets galore as KVF second leg gets underway

Upsets galore as KVF second leg gets underway

Kenya Army, a side that was struggling to produce positive results last season, produced the first upset, subjecting Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to a 3-1 defeat.

Action at the Nyayo Indoor and outdoor arenas on Friday 10 February was a mixed bag of upsets, forfeitures and thrillers as the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men's league got underway.

The biggest match of the day was easily the clash between holders General Service Unit (GSU) and arch-rivals Prisons Kenya but, while highly anticipated, the final result was nothing unexpected.

It was in the earlier matches that upsets were registered, a walkover and a forfeiture handed, all in a day's work.

Silver medalist Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) who were a no-show on the first day of the second leg of the season and their opponents for the day Prisons Central had to forfeit their points.

Meanwhile, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) benefited from a walkover as Vihiga County were not available for their clash. The side is, however, expected to feature in Saturday and Sunday matches.

Kenya Army, a side that was struggling to produce positive results last season, produced the first upset, subjecting Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to a 3-1 defeat.

Moneybags Trailblazers were next on the chopping board as they faced off with Administration Police (AP).

The league's bronze medalists were in for a rude awakening as they lost the opening set 26-24 to law enforcement side, setting the stage for a spectacular show in the coming sets.

The Geoffrey Omondi-coached Trailblazers leveled the sets with a 24-26 score of their own but were not ready for the terror that was unleashed on then in the third and fourth set as they went on to lose 3-1.

In the final match of the day, Prisons Kenya put up a spirited fight against GSU is the first set but lost 27-25.

Unforced errors in the second set saw the warders relinquish their lead to go down 25-21 with the final set a GSU show as they won 25-12 against a Prisons side that seemed to have resigned to fate.

Action continues on Saturday and Sunday at the same venue as the division two league that has attracted six teams serves off as well.
