Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama has warned Group C opponents Algeria and Senegal not to underrate both Kenya and Tanzania as they will be in to make their presence felt in the pool. The two East African neighbors are the least ranked teams in the pool.
While Kenya are returning for the first time in 15 years, Tanzania have only made it to the AFCON for the first time in 39 years.
“Yes, we are the underdogs in this pool but I think football has changed all over the world. Many teams have proved that and we will be no pushovers in this group. We respect our opponents but it will not be easy for them,” Wanyama stated.
The 2019 UEFA Champions League finalist says the team is focused and ready for their opening match against Algeria’s desert foxes, saying the players are all anchored to make history in Egypt.
“We are motivated because for everyone, it is the first time being at a stage like this and for us what we want is to make this become a norm for us; qualifying for every AFCON. We are here to perform well and if we do so, then we can always go back home with more belief,” Wanyama added.
The skipper has also lamented on the absence of defender Brian Mandela who picked up a knee injury in training and successfully underwent knee surgery in France on Wednesday. He says they will miss his leadership on the pitch but is pleased he will be flying in to Cairo to stay with the team.
