Ulinzi Stars hold Gor Mahia in Kisumu
Gor Mahia and Ulinzi Stars played to a one all draw in their league match on Sunday.
Enosh Ochieng equalized from the penalty spot as Ulinzi Stars held champions Gor Mahia to a 1-1 draw in Kisumu on Sunday. This is the second consecutive draw picked up by Gor who registered a similar result against Kakamega Homeboyz last Friday.
The result sees them remain second on the log with 46 points, two behind leaders Sofapaka who had earlier won 1-0 in Awendo against Sony Sugar. Gor though have four games in hand and one of them, against Bandari will be played on Tuesday in Kisumu.
Oliech broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart with a fine low finish from the edge of the box off a Francis Kahata pass.
In the first half it was a tightly contested affair with chances either side. In the 25th minute, Shabaan Odhoji made a vital double save to deny Enosh, first when he glanced in a header from Brian Birgen’s cross before he picked the spills but his shot was once again saved.
Four minutes on the turn, Oliech made a good run on the left before cutting back to Francis Kahata whose connection went high under pressure from Omar Mbongi.
Both sides were forced into early changes after 31 minutes, Gor’s Philemon Otieno limping off and was replaced by Pascal Ogweno while Ulinzi midfielder Ibrahim Shambi also went off off clutching his groin and his place was taken by Bernard Ongoma.
Ten minutes after going ahead, Gor saw their lead cut short when Ochieng slotted home from the spot after he was clipped on the heel by Geoffrey Ochieng with the Gor side protesting the spot kick.
Gor put up the pressure to try and get a win that would have catapulted them to the top and made changes, Jack Tuyisenge coming on for George Odhiambo.
Oliech came close to his second of the evening when he glanced in a header from a Kenneth Muguna freekick but Saruni pulled off an equally good save.
In the 77th minute Oliech set up Ochieng who however shot way over the bar with the goal all in his view. Oliech also had a chance late on but his effort was saved at point blank by Saruni.
