Coach Nixon Oyaro led his side, Ulinzi men’s handball club to victory in the last Super Cup and with that, he is ready to guide his charges to clinching the elusive Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) title.
The side was denied by National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) last season, finishing a close second, but exacted revenge in the Super Cup, a tournament reserved for the top six finishers, as they beat the millers in the final.
Coach Oyaro has since been building on that success and his side has started the 2023 league season with a five-match winning streak, one the military side will look to extend to six when they take on newbies Hunters on Sunday.
“I have maintained the same squad that did duty last season and the start has been perfect so far. It still is early days but the good start is great motivation to keep working towards winning all our matches and reclaiming the league title that is long overdue,” the former player turned coach said.
While exuding confidence in his squad’s abilities to go all the way in the 25-team league, Oyaro says there are areas that still need some work for the side to be the best in the league.
“It is a work in progress, one that I am satisfied with the advancement so far,” the tactician added, citing his right attack and goalkeeping as some of the departments they are working to improve.
With holders and leaders NCPB out of action this weekend, Oyaro’s charges have the opportunity to go top of the standings when they face Hunters on Sunday.
Saturday’s action will see Hunters play Nanyuki as Young City take on Buccaneers. Spartans face off with Daystar, paving the way for an Equity HC versus Desert Scorpions showdown. The women’s league has Amazon up against Daystar Falcons as New Hope rivals NYS.
On Sunday Daystar face newbies Buccaneers Juniors, paving way for Ulinzi’s match before Equity HC take on Nanyuki. GSU play Young City as Buccaneers entertain Black Mamba. Only one fixture for the women’s league is scheduled, pitting Daystar against New Hope.
