Handball league silverware for Ulinzi handball teams has been scarce in the recent past. One will struggle to get the year the women’s team Ulinzi Sharks lifted the title, while their male counterparts have  to open the history books to page 2016 to find their name.

The two sides are, however, on a mission to bag a rare double with coaches Nixon Oyaro and his women’s team counterpart Emmanuel Kieti charting the path for what would be a huge feat for the military side.

Sharks who have lost one match against holders Nairobi Water in the first leg, have what is possibly the clearest path to lifting the title since making a comeback to the league in 2018, but it is not all roses as they have to win all their remaining matches to lift the title.

“We want to win this. We have what it takes to achieve that as we have a full squad, with some key players who missed out part of last year’s action back, adding to our depth. The target is to win all the remaining matches and lift the title,” key player Caren Letungeya said.

Nairobi Water’s loss to Rangers has given the military side  an ‘easier’ path to the title. Having lost to Water in the opening leg, Letungeya insists they will get the better of their nemesis in the second leg.

As for the men’s title, coach Oyaro is also faced with a similar predicament of needing maximum points in all remaining matches to dethrone National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).

“Every team is tough in this league so we cannot approach any match as more important than the other. We take it one match at a time, without any complacency. Yes, there are some key teams we are yet to face but we will handle them when it is their turn. We haven’t lost a match and we want to keep it that way,” Oyaro, whose men’s side has dropped points once in a draw against Strathmore University said.
