Jacques Tuyisenge and Samuel Onyango scored each in the first half as Gor Mahia moved seven points clear of second placed Sofapaka on the Kenyan Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Tusker FC in Machakos.
Gor who were beneficiaries of three free points from Mount Kenya United’s walk over on Thursday moved to 55 points ahead of Sofapaka who are on 48 pending Sunday’s match against Mathare United.
The defending champions broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Tuyisenge tapped home from close range off a Kenneth Muguna cross. Muguna was at hand once again to offer the assist for the second goal when his cross was met by Onyango inside the box.
Though his initial effort was blocked, the former Ulinzi Stars man managed to pick the rebound and guide it home.
Tusker had their chances and the closest fell on Boniface Muchiri whose stinging freekick from range was turned behind for a corner by Shabaan Odhoji with a one handed save.
In the second half, Tusker coach Robert Matano made changes hauling off the ineffective David Naftali and Noah Wafula for Clyde Ssenaji and Peter Nzuki in a bid to firm up the midfield that had been dominated by Gor in the opening half.
The changes seemed to have brought positivity as Tusker became more offensive.
Two minutes after the restart, Muchiri was sent through by Jackson Macharia but his shot from the right went over. Ten minutes later, Macharia put Sydney Ochieng through this time, but Odhoji was faster off his line to block the effort.
They had an even better chance on the hour mark when Muchiri delivered a good corner at the back post, but Justin Omary’s header unmarked sailed straight to Odhoji’s arms.
Timothy Otieno looked to have given Tusker some hope when he had the ball in the net after 61 minutes but he was adjudged to have been offside after controlling Macharia’s shot from inside the box and headed it over the keeper. However, replays showed otherwise.
Tusker threw in everything at Gor, but couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net. They had a good cvhance late on when keeper OPdhoji punched Senaji’s shot into the direction of Otieno, but the striker skied the effort from close range.
At the stroke of 90 minutes Sydney Ochieng should have scored at least a consolation but he missed a sitter off Hillary Wandera’s cross.
