Tononoka held as KSSSA games kick off
Pre-tounament favorites, Tononoka of Mombasa and Nzoia's Kapenguria were held by minors Tetu and Wera Secondary Schools respectively in
their opening boy’s football matches as the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association KSSSA term 2B ball games got underway in Embu on Tuesday.
Wera made a stern warning at the Lake Region games a fortnight ago, knocking out 2011 champions Gekomoni and their silent but stern warning were even stronger at the national stage after forcing a slim 1-1 draw over 1994 champions, Kapenguria on day one of the KSSSA games that kick off at the Kangaru Girls in Embu County, Tuesday.
Tononoka were not lucky either and despite taking an early lead in the first half through Abdul Swalleh they could not live to their billing when they surrendered the lead in the second half when they allowed Ruotkoch Ricardo David equalized for the Arbedare representetives from the spot.
The little known Wera Secondary School from Siaya County pulled the surprise, when they took the lead through a David Ochieng who looped a nice ball in Kapenguria's top roof after Kevin Ochieng handled the ball inside his box.
Kapenguria did not lose hope despite trailing their opponent for the better part of the game and their effort almost paid off immediately after resumption but Peterson Rochoro attempted 'hand of god' goal was judged to be a handball by centre referee, David Gikonyo after forcing
the ball in the net with his left hand.
Kapenguria who won the title in 1993 and 1994 continued piling pressure forward and with only 18 minutes left on the clock, David Ochieng fed Kevin Ochieng who unleashed a powerful right foot shot which left Wera's custodian with no option but to watch his net
shaking amidst cheers from Kapengurua fans. The game ended 1-1
Wera are making their debut in the national championship while Kapenguria are fighting for their first national title since 1994
Kipchimchim (Nskuru) beat Mandera 7-1 while Upper Hill laboured to beat Gathungi in the othet boys pool B match.
