This marks the first time that the 1965, 1978 and 1982 AFCON Champions have failed to qualify for AFCON in 20 years.
African footballing giants Ghana failed to qualify for AFCON for the first time in 20 years after they were held to a 1 – 1 draw by already qualified Angola on Friday night in Luanda.
This match was a decisive one for Ghana and they managed to get a 1-0 lead at halftime. Despite having qualified, Angola stood firm throughout the match and ensured that the Black Stars couldn’t build on their advantage.
Ghana were the first side to score in the 18th minute when Leicester City striker Jordan Ayew scored through a free kick. He delivered a powerful shot into the top-left corner leaving Angola’s goalkeeper, Neblu, no chance.
The rest of the game saw little action in terms of goal-scoring opportunities and despite Ghana’s efforts, they couldn’t extend their lead. Angola’s equalizer came in the second half through Zito Luvumbo, sealing a draw that ended Ghana’s qualification hopes for the 35th edition of AFCON.
This marks the first time that the 1965, 1978 and 1982 AFCON Champions have failed to qualify for AFCON in 20 years. It is a big blow to their footballing pride. All focus now shifts to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers where they will look to rebuild and reignite their winning spirit.
