Harambee Stars striker Jesse Were came off the bench to score a superb goal and set up another to help his side Zesco United come from behind to beat Buildcon 3-1 in their opening fixture of the Zambian Premier League at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The match dubbed Ndola derby featured three Kenyans in Jesse Were and David “Calabar” Odhiambo for Zesco United while Former Ulinzi Stars man John Makwatta donned the hosts Buildcon jersey.
It was the first match for Zesco in the 2018 FAZ Super Division season as they were engaged in CAF Champions League March.
The hosts, Buildcon FC, took the lead in the 33rd minute when John Makwatta supplied the corner that Rahim Osuman neatly headed home.
Seven minutes after the break, Lameck Banda fed Adams Zikiru who headed home for Zesco United’s leveler.
Kenyan Jesse Were then joined the fray in the 57th minute coming on for the ineffective Winstone Kalengo.
Were did not take long to settle and open his scoring account with a beautiful solo effort after he dribbled past former teammate Ben Adama and former Nkana defender Christopher Munthali then sent his shot past Buildcon custodian Tatenda Mkuruva.
The proceedings got worse for Buildcon as they lost Devon Chaffa to a red card in the 77th minute for a second bookable offence.
Jesse Were was in the thick of things to win Zesco a penalty that Lazarus Kambole scored for a 3-1 win in the 84th minute
With only a match played, Zesco United are placed 9th in the 20-team Zambia Super Division table. Power Dynamos lead with 7 points from 3 matches.
The going is tough for John Makwatta’s side Buildcon as they are yet to register a point from three matches.
