St. Anthony's survive Garissa scare as Kisumu Day, St. Johns reach semis

Garissa High School nearly pulled off the upset of the ongoing National Secondary Schools Ball Games football competition, playing to a 2-2 draw with former champions St. Anthony's in a Pool A encounter played Wednesday at the Machakos School.

The Northern Region reps rallied from a goal down to lead 2-1 with moments to go before St. Anthony's scored late to tie the match.

In another Pool A encounter, Said Sumba struck with virtually the last kick of the game to secure Kisumu Day's qualification to the semis courtesy of a 2-1 win over a very competitive Kathungi.

It was a fast paced match, Kathungi dominating the first half exchanges, striker Ken Mutembei proving a handful for the K.D defense. The two sides would go into the breather scoreless.

Kathungi drew first blood when Saidi Hamisi scored from the penalty spot after livewire Mutembei was fouled in the box.

Kisumu Day kept chugging at it, drawing level when lethal striker Dennis Ochieng turned his Kathungi markers before planting the ball in the net for a  1-1 score.

They would then draw a foul off Kathungi in the last minute of time added on, Sumba drilling home the free kick that secured the win for Kisumu Day who head into Thursday'scrunch clash against St. Anthony's top of the table.

St. John's Kaloneni ran riot in the girls' category, beating Kirigara 9-0 to secure their berth in the semi finals. The result sees the Coastal side top Pool A after Olympic and Wiyeta played to a barren draw.

Volleyball

Reigning girls Kwanthanze defeated powerhouse Lugulu 3-1 to book their semi final berth with a round of pool play to spare.

Defending boys champions Malava Boys were too strong for Tetu, beating the Aberdares side in straight sets to also reach the semis with a game to spare.
