World 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Simiu Ebenyo made a remarkable debut at the Sirikwa Classic racing to a 29:16 victory in the penultimate World Cross Country Tour Gold meet held on Saturday, February 3, at the Lobo Village in Eldoret.

Ebenyo, who started his year on a high with victory in the Campaccio International Cross Country race held in San Giorgio su Legnano, Italy, on January 6, completing the course in 26:19 was racing the home event for the first time and nothing would stop the world half marathon silver medalist.

Despite going up against a star-studded field, the 28-year-old held on to edge world U20 cross country champion Ishmael Kipkurui, who completed the race in 29:18, while Weldon Lagat completed the podium in 29:26.

The women’s senior category title went to 22-year-old Emmaculate Anyango who was fresh from winning the 10K Valencia Ibercaja in January, becoming only the second woman in history to run 10km under 29 minutes and the world’s second-fastest woman over 10km.

Anyango emerged winner at 32:55, finishing ahead of Joycelline Jepkosgei (33:10) and Catherine Reline (33:18).

Meanwhile, the U20 category plaudits went to Mathew Koech, fresh from winning this year’s Discovery Kenya cross-country race and Mercy Chepkemoi.

Kipkoech clocked 23:32 to improve on his personal best of 24:40 from the Discovery Kenya event.  Japan-based Samuel Kibathi was second in 23:37, while Charles Rotich completed the podium in 23:40.
