Shujaa, Kenya’s men’s national rugby 7s team, earned their first victory at the Perth 7s, defeating Uruguay 19-5 in their final Pool C match on Saturday morning. The win came after two tough losses to New Zealand and Fiji on Friday, but despite the positive result, Kenya’s hopes of advancing were dashed as they finished last in Pool C, relegating them to the 9th-place semifinal.

The match began with Shujaa showing strong intent. In the third minute, Dennis Abukuse made a crucial offload to Kevin Wekesa, who sprinted over the try line to open the scoring. Tony Omondi added the extras for a 7-0 lead.

Nygel Amaitsa quickly followed with an unconverted try before playing a key role in setting up Patrick Odongo for the third try. Amaitsa cleverly chipped the ball forward, and Odongo pounced on it, diving under the posts to extend Kenya’s lead to 19-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Uruguay managed a solitary try through Tomas Etcheverry, but it was not enough to threaten Shujaa’s dominance, and the match ended 19-5 in Kenya’s favor.
