Shilwatso was among the three recent arrivals in the camp, joining goalkeeper Enez Mango and Lilian Awour, both of whom play for the FCV Farul Constanta in the Romanian league.
Turkey based midfielder Cynthia Shilwatso expressed optimism and determination as she spoke to the media during a media session at Harambee Starlets’ training at Absa Sports Ground in Nairobi on Monday. The 24-year-old, who plays for Besiktas, arrived just in time for the crucial preparations ahead of the team’s upcoming WAFCON (Women’s Africa Cup of Nations) qualifiers.
In her media address, Shilwatso thanked God for her safe arrival and shared her thoughts on the team’s readiness for the match against their formidable opponents.
“The journey has been good and I thank God for my safe arrival. It’s great to find the team in good spirits and working well together,” said Shilwatso. “This home game is a must-win for us, as securing the three points will make it easier for us to seal our qualification when we play away.”
As one of the key players in the midfield, Shilwatso made it clear that she would give her all on the field to ensure Harambee Starlets secure victory. “From me, I will give my best during the match and put in an extra shift to help the team secure the win. For me, that means scoring goals and contributing to the team’s success.”
Shilwatso, who has made a remarkable recovery from a long term injury, talked about the importance of resilience in the recovery process. “My recovery went well. When you get injured, you have to keep in mind that recovery requires hard work and patience. I did that, and now I feel like I’m back to my best.”
Reflecting on the past disappointment of being eliminated by Botswana in the 2023 WAFCON qualifiers on a 2 - 1 aggregate, Shilwatso spoke of the team’s renewed determination. “We have a second chance at WAFCON qualification, and we can’t let it slip away. Last time, we lost, but now it’s about making sure we qualify. There is no escape route this time, even though they are a strong opponent. We must score goals, defend well and ensure we beat them here, and if possible, away as well. We have to maximize every opportunity, something we didn’t do last time. We have to make sure we don’t repeat the mistakes.”
On a lighter note, Shilwatso was asked about the pressure of seeing her younger counterparts in the Junior Starlets heading to the World Cup. With a smile, she acknowledged the healthy competition. “Yes, you know, if your little sister does something better than you, it motivates you to step up your game. As the elder one, it pushes me to put in extra effort to match or surpass their achievements.”
Shilwatso also addressed the fans, encouraging them to come out in large numbers to support the team. “To our fans, we promise to give our best on the field and make sure we qualify. We need your support to keep pushing us forward.”
