After months of wrangles and court cases, Sasha Mutai has resigned as Chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), stepping down moments before a no-confidence motion was tabled at a tense Special General Meeting held Friday at the RFUEA Grounds.

Mutai, who took office unopposed in March 2023, cited internal wrangles, political pressure and a desire to protect his integrity.

“Maybe I’m not a good politician, maybe I don’t know how to cajole,” he said. “Having read the room and thinking of my role model Mwangi Muthee, I resign as chair.”

His resignation came amid allegations of misappropriating Ksh 13.2 million, claims pushed by KRU Secretary General Ray Olendo. The money was allegedly paid to vendors who never delivered services.

Mutai strongly denied the accusations, calling them defamatory and politically motivated.

“Thank you, Mr. Secretary, for making me a rich man. I’ll see you in court,” he said. “My name has been dragged through the mud. I’ve only ever been in court in my life because of rugby.”

He accused some board members of undermining his leadership, submitting fake documents and overstaying their terms.

“They ganged up, but it’s democracy. If nine people say my white shirt is black, it’s still white. I leave with my head high.”

Despite the storm, Mutai stood by his achievements, including reviving the Kenya Sevens team and restoring sponsorships.

“I won’t trade my values for power,” he said. “I’ve lived 48 years with integrity.”

Mutai, a former player, says he’s not walking away from the sport he loves.

“I’ll still be around. Rugby is in my blood. I'll still show up and watch and support.”

His exit highlights growing tensions at KRU and sets the stage for a leadership shakeup.
