Safaricom Golf Tour Targets 2028 Olympics
Junior Golfer Audrey Kathere tees off at the golf Park during the inaugural Safaricom golf series launch.

Safaricom will pour in KES 100 million for this inaugural edition of the tour, which will be played in various golf clubs across the country starting at the Nanyuki Sports Club on the 29th and 30th of January.

The launch of the Safaricom Golf Tour brings in its path a vision to have upcoming juniors who will be ready and professional to conquer Africa within the next decade.

Launched on Saturday 22nd January 2022, the 14-leg amateur series dubbed the Safaricom Golf Tour aims to tap, nurture and grow talent among young golfers across the country.

Among its top agendas, the series will include junior competitions, youth clinics and golf outreach programmes, run in partnership with the Junior Golf Foundation and Kenya Golf Union.

Speaking on the side-lines of the first tee off last Saturday, Junior Golfers president Larry Ngala quipped that, “This partnership targets to impart skills and professional development to 6000 youths across Kenya by 2023.”

In addition, Ngala noted that, “We would like to thank Safaricom for believing in our dream. This partnership will trigger more interests and demystify the sport.”

Also speaking at the launch, Safaricom Chief Executive Peter Ndegwa said “As Safaricom we have been supporting sports for the past 20 years and we have seen the fruits over the years. In particular, we are more interested to introduce golf to the youth as we seek to push our junior golfers to join and take part in international tours.”

Ndegwa added that, “As Safaricom we hope to support the nurturing of junior players who will play at the top level before they are 30.”

Safaricom has in the past featured prominently in the development of junior sports cadres through some of their programs including the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom, a junior soccer tournament that has supported identification of many junior talents both in men and women soccer.

The 14-leg amateur series will culminate with the grand finale at Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort in August where winners from each event will converge to determine the overall champions. Other Legs will see the tour traverse the Kenyan landscape in Limuru, Nyanza, Nyali, Eldoret, Karen, Machakos, Kericho, Kitale, Royal Nairobi, Nakuru, Kenya Airforce and Vet Labs.
