At the time of his departure, Sofapaka sits 7th on the log with 21 points, with Matano having successfully helped the club fight relegation and remain in the top flight last season.
Kenya’s most decorated coach, Robert ‘The Lion’ Matano, has made a move to the Tanzanian Premier League(TPL), joining Fountain Gate FC. The coach, who has previously been linked with two different Tanzanian clubs, departs from KPL side Sofapaka FC.
A five-time Kenyan Premier League champion, Matano was first linked with a move to Tabora United earlier last year and even traveled to Tanzania for negotiations, but the deal fell through. In October of the same year, he visited again for talks with Coastal Union, another TPL club, but once more, the move didn’t materialize.
Sofapaka FC confirmed Matano’s departure on their social media, stating, “We wish to notify you that our head coach, Robert Matano, has left the club. We are grateful for his services and wish him the best in his new role.”
At the time of his departure, Sofapaka sits 7th on the log with 21 points, with Matano having successfully helped the club fight relegation and remain in the top flight last season. He now joins Fountain Gate FC, who are currently 6th with 20 points after 14 matches. Sofapaka also announced that assistant coach Ezekiel Akwana will take over as the club’s head coach.
