President William Ruto was among thousands of soccer fans who thronged Nyayo Stadium to witness the 96th Mashemeji derby between perennial rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

The President Ruto was joined by Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Nairobi Governor Arthur Johnson Sakaja, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, MPs Felix Odiwor, John Kiarie, Ndindi Nyoro, Ronald Karauri among other dignitaries, almost a replica of Saturday’s outing at Kasarani Stadium for the fourth edition of Kip Keino Classic.

On the pitch, the Mashemeji derby living to its billing with AFC Leopards managing to break a seven year wait for victory by beating Gor Mahia 2-1. Victor Omune and Maxwell Otieno scored Ingwe’s goals while Austin Odhiambo netted the consolation for k’Ogalo

In a scene not seen of late, thousands of fans heeded the call and attended the match live at Nyayo Stadium to rekindle old moments when the Premier League used to be a must attend weekend activity. Pay TV provider Azam TV also broadcast the match live on HD across Africa.



After the match, a thrilled President Ruto walked to the picth and handed the day’s protagonists Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards Ksh 1 million each for the entertaining outing.

The President also promised to marshal government resources to ensure the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations joint hosting bid with East African neighbours was successful.

"Congratulations! This is the best game I have seen in a long time. This game we shall change and Kenya shall reclaim her rightful position in soccer. On Wednesday, we shall place a bid for AFCON 2027," Said President Ruto,

Earlier on Saturday, the clubs were hosted by the Cabinet Secretary for ICT Mr. Eliud Owalo that was also was attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary Mr. Ababu Namwamba.
