Pirates plotting relegation-escape route

Up against fellow University of Nairobi (UoN) Terror and Umoja basketball club, Pirates lost by half a basket at 51-50 to the varsity side before picking a 60-50 win over Umoja

Coach Caleb Osewe has his work cut out as he looks to help his side survive the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men's league chop at the end of this season.

Ahead of the weekend matches, the Kenyatta University Pirates' coach had only guided the varsity side to five wins in 15 matches and needed to pick some points to move up the 12-team log.

Up against fellow University of Nairobi (UoN) Terror and Umoja basketball club, Pirates lost by half a basket at 51-50 to the varsity side before picking a 60-50 win over Umoja, their sixth of the season.

"We are leaning dangerously on the cut-off line and we needed the weekend points to move to safety. We came close in the match against Terror and played well against Umoja and that gives us a bit of breathing space.

We are not yet out of danger so we have to keep fighting in the remaining matches so we can escape the relegation. We may not make it to the top eight for a playoff slot but the focus is on remaining in the top tier," offered coach Osewe.

Meanwhile, title-hopefuls Equity Dumas were, this weekend subjected to their third loss of the season, a loss that allowed former champions Ulinzi Warriors move top after winning their encounter away in Kisumu.

Dumas lost 52-49 to Terror on Sunday while Warriors won their match 52-61 to Lakeside and are now top on 34 points after 19 matches while the bankers are a point behind but with a match in hand.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) who have not been in action in the last two weekends have lost just once to Africa Nazarene University (ANU) Wolfpacks.

Coached by Sammy Kiki, The dockers have played 13 matches and have a chance to finish top of the table at the conclusion of the regular season if they can keep their losses to just the one against Wolfpacks.
