This was Patel’s third win of the 2022 season.

Karan Patel put daylight between him and Zambian champion Leroy Gomes as he clinched the ARC Equator Rally title in Naivasha yesterday.

The Kenyan driver, navigated by Tauseef Khan in a Ford Fiesta R2 edged out the Zambian by three minutes, 13.1 seconds as he won four out of the eight stages to reign supreme. Karan cumulatively timed 2hrs, 26mins and 55.4secs to win the gruelling two-day showpiece in the lakeside city of Naivasha.

This was Patel’s third win of the 2022 season.

“The competition was all good and I am happy to have our brothers from the continent competing in Kenya. The drive-shaft problems towards the last two stages of Saturday slowed us down but we were lucky to nurse the car to the service and changed it to tackled leg two with a good car,” an excited Patel said after the win.

Jasmeet Chana navigated by Ravi Chana in a Mitsubishi Evolution 10 completed the podium sweep with a cumulative time of 2:30:51.0 while the FIA Rally Star duo of Jeremy Wahome and Victor Okundi were fourth in their Ford Fiesta six seconds later.

Meanwhile, Maxine Wahome, navigated by Murage Waigwa achieved her target of finishing in the top 10 when she stood sixth at the end of day two, clocking a cumulative time of 02:53:48.1.

A total of 12 out of 19 starters survived the demanding course. The opening day’s circuit recolved around the Elementeita, Sleeping Warrior and Soysambu stages while Sunday’s closing day stages were in Loldia and Kedong.

The rally was being used as part of the dry run for July’s WRC Safari Rally which will be competed around the same route.
