Alex Orotomal scored a goal in either half as AFC Leopards overcame a stiff challenge from Posta Rangers before winning 2-1 at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. In other results, Kariobangi Sharks were in emphatic form, Eric Kapaito scoring his second hatrick of the season as they won 5-2 against Nakumatt.
In Awasi, Chemelil Sugar picked vital three points with a 1-0 win over visiting Mathare United to hand them some huge survival reprieve.
Sharks came from a goal down after Kyata Amani broke the deadlock four minutes into the game. George Abege equalized for Sharks before Kapaito went into his goal spree, one from the spit in the second half before substitute Sidney Lokale sealed the tie.
In Machakos, AFC Leopards continued to push into the top two when they delivered a hard working performance against a resilient Posta to earn the win.
A brilliant start saw Orotomal break the deadlock on the quarter hour mark when he glanced in a header at the edge of the six yard box from a Brian Marita cross. AFC had shown early signs of hunger for victory and just seven minutes before Orotomal scored, Whyvonne Isuza had a shot from the left saved by keeper Gradus Ochieng.
Posta gave in a fight after going down and just two minutes later, they would have gone level. Titus Achesa made a superb run off the left skipping past all his markers, but his delivery inside the box didn’t’ match the quality of his movement and teamwork.
In the 25th minute, Cavin Odongo’s well swung volley went inches wide after the ball fell gracefully on his path when Orotomal’s header in defense of a Jockins Atudo long throw lingered his way.
Joseph Nyaga had an even better chance in the 28th minute when he beat the offside trap on the left, but he couldn’t produce a quality finish to beat keeper Ezekiel Owade one on one.
But, three minutes later, his blushes were wiped. Posta went back on level terms through Georson Likonoh who tapped in simply past Owade after AFC skipper Duncan Otieno missed a clearance off a Peter Ng’ang’a flick.
In the second half though, AFC came back seeking their lead back with attacking changes made, Ray Omondi coming on for Vincent Oburu. They camped in the Posta half and had to wait till the 85th minute when Orotomal registered his second with a stinging shot from distance that beat Gradus Ochieng.
The victory took AFC to 51 points, three behind second placed Bandari who play Zoo Kericho on Sunday.
