Manchester United secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium to move to 8th place with 6 points on Saturday. Despite an early penalty scare in the 30th minute, goalkeeper Andre Onana stepped up to save his team from conceding with a crucial save of Cameron Archer's penalty.
United responded strongly nine minutes after the missed penalty with defender Matthijs de Ligt scoring his first goal for the club from a Bruno Fernandes corner just before halftime. Six minutes later, Englishman Marcus Rashford also found the net for the first time since March, finishing off a move involving striker Joshua Zirkzee to double United’s lead.
In the second half, United continued to dominate, but former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made several key saves to deny Rashford and defender Noussair Mazraoui. Southampton’s task for the day became even more difficult when captain Jack Stephens was sent off in the 79th minute for a tackle on Alejandro Garnacho.
Despite the possession advantage, United struggled to break through Southampton’s defense until the dying moments. Alejandro Garnacho who came from the bench sealed the victory with a superb finish from Dalot’s cross in stoppage time.
This will be Eric ten Hag’s second win of the season having last won a match during the opening game of the season on 16th August when they beat Fulham one nil at Old Trafford before falling short to Brighton and Liverpool consecutively.
