After close to three months of inaction in the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) 2023/24 league season, action returns with all roads leading to Busia County for the Malaba league-cum tournament.
This is the third leg of the season that commenced last year but was put on hold to allow for the national teams, Wafalme Stars and Malkia Strikers, time to prepare for the CAVB Zone Five Africa Games qualifiers. The league matches are set for the 15th and 16th with the tournament, involving community clubs and institutions, taking center stage on the weekend.
Former league bronze medalists, Trailblazers, head to the competition with high hopes of clinching maximum points in the four matches they play in the border county.
“We have four tough matches but we are handling them one at a time. We are confident of posting wins despite the opposition we face. We are prepared and ready to face the challenge ahead,” head coach Geoffrey Omondi said ahead of the clashes.
The fixtures are promising thrilling clashes against formidable opponents as Omondi’s charges go up against Francis Nguma-led Administration Police (AP) on Thursday morning before taking on holders Prisons Kenya in the afternoon.
On Friday, the second day of league action, Trailblazers face off with Prisons Nairobi while former champions General Service Unit (GSU) lie in wait in the afternoon.
“We have been able to train without any major injuries and everyone is raring to go. We lost to three of the four teams we are scheduled to play in Malaba so we are factoring that in as we head to the matches. We expect tough match-ups and we have prepared accordingly. Maximum points in these four matches will be a big boost in our quest for a playoff place,” skipper and team libero James Mutero said.
