Angela Okutoyi clinched a remarkable victory over Egyptian Abdelaziz Lamiz with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday, seizing the tennis gold medal at the African Games held in Accra, Ghana.
This triumph marked a historic moment as the USA-based university student became the first Kenyan to secure gold in this category since the 1978 Games in Algiers, Algeria. Back then, it was Jane Davies who emerged victorious against Susan Wakhungu in an all-Kenyan final.
Okutoyi, a three-time Kenya Open champion, asserted her dominance right from the onset, commanding the match with her powerful serves and precise shots, swiftly accumulating a 3-0 lead. However, Lamiz put up a resilient fight, managing to break Okutoyi's serve in the fourth and fifth games, narrowing the margin to 3-2.
Despite the spirited comeback from Lamiz, Okutoyi's unwavering resolve shone through as she regained control, securing the fifth and sixth games to surge ahead 4-2. Although Lamiz managed to level the score at 4-4 in an enthralling first set, the 20-year-old Okutoyi exhibited her mental fortitude to clinch the final two games and claim the set.
In the subsequent set, Okutoyi continued her dominant display, carrying over the momentum from the first set. With a combination of blistering groundstroke returns and remarkable agility, she overwhelmed Lamiz, racing to a decisive victory. The Kenyan's performance ignited celebrations among her compatriots, both players, and fans alike.
Earlier in the tournament, Okutoyi had battled her way to the final, overcoming the challenge of 70th-ranked Mayar Sheriff of Egypt in a thrilling semifinal clash, which ended 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 in her favor.
With this win, Okutoyi moves one step closer to qualifying for the Paris Olympics, setting her sights on breaking into the top 400 of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings by June 10. Currently positioned at 532, she aims to continue her ascent in the world of tennis.
