Kenya Morans small forward Albert Odero and guard Derrick Ogechi were the hero's of the day as the national men’s basketball team picked their first FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers group E win.

Playing Guinea in their last qualification match of Window one in Monastir, Tunisia, the duo went ham on the West Africans scoring 19 and 16 points respectively to lead the East Africans to a 80-74 victory.

The win puts Morans one step closer to qualifying for the 2025 AfroBasket from a group that has defending champions Tunisia and powerhouse Angola.

The Cliff Owuor-coached men got action going with a 24-19 first quarter performance that gave them the momentum needed in the must-win clash, keeping the fire in the second with a 25-17 showing to carry a 13-point advantage to the break.

Guinea put up a spirited fight to take the third quarter 22-15 and cut Morans' advantage to just six heading to the final period, but Owuor's charges held their own in a 16-16 final quarter score line to win.

Despite not topping the scores, Joel Awich emerged Kenya's best player in the clash with an efficiency of 19, having dropped 12 points, 8 rebounds, one assistant, a steal and a block.

Morans have a close to a year to prepare for the next phase of qualification as they play in February next year. The November window of qualifiers features teams in Group A and C.

Morans will be keen to make back-to-back appearances at the continental showpiece, having made a return in 2021 after a 28-year hiatus.
