Obiri's hunt for Olympic gold continues as focus turns to Paris

Obiri's hunt for Olympic gold continues as focus turns to Paris

Her latest victory came on Wednesday 24 May as she defeated Commonwealth Games 5000m bronze medalist Selah Jepleting at the KDF championships held at Ulinzi Complex.

Two-time world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri is hoping to make it to the final list of Team Kenya to next year's Paris Olympics.

The track queen-turned marathoner says she will be giving the chase for gold at the Summer Games one last shot, eyeing the marathon.

Despite having a glowing career at the world championships and being the only woman to win a world title indoors, outdoors and cross country, her outings at the Olympics have not been as successful.

She has been to the London, Rio and Tokyo Olympics and only boasts two silver medals from the last two Games.

In what will be her fourth Olympics, the 33-year-old hopes to finally break the duck competing in the classic distance.

"I have been going to the Olympics and failed to win gold but now I believe that the last chance I have to win is Paris,” she said.

Obiri made her debut in marathon in New York last year, finishing sixth in 2:25:49. She got her 2023 campaign off to strong start winning the RAK Half in February and then the New York City Half Marathon in March.

In April, up against the deepest women’s field ever assembled at the Boston Marathon, in only her second race over the classic distance, she emerged victorious for her first World Major Marathon (WMM) title.

Closing hard she dropped her final opponents in the last few minutes of the race and triumphed with a personal best time of 2:21:38, 12 seconds clear of second-place finisher Amane Beriso who had by far the fastest personal best heading into the race (2:14:58).

It has been a very successful season for Obiri so far as she has won all races she has started since her Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Cross Country victory in January.

Her latest victory came on Wednesday 24 May as she defeated Commonwealth Games 5000m bronze medalist Selah Jepleting at the KDF championships held at Ulinzi Complex.
