The side dethroned holders Kenya Pipeline in a 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) outcome, with coach Munala lauding his trusted lieutenants led by skipper Mercy Moim as well as the youngsters
Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Prisons Kenya are the newest champions in two.
The two sides dethroned Kenya Pipeline and General Service Unit (GSU) to lift this year’s Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) women and men’s league title respectively.
With the 2023/24 season set to serve off almost immediately with a technical meeting scheduled for 14 October to lay the ground, the two champions have no time to rest in their quest to retain their titles.
KCB head coach Japheth Munala says that ending the long wait for the national title sets the stage for his side to fight for the African title and build on the positive result to dominate the local scene.
“It has been a long time coming. I was the last coach to win the title with the bankers and when I made a comeback to the side, we had to wait for two seasons (2021,2022) to make this a reality. I am happy it has come to pass.
Our focus now shifts to preparing for the upcoming season well aware that we have a target on our backs. At the same time, we want to reclaim the African title we won in 2022 but lost this year to Zamalek,” offered coach Munala.
The side dethroned holders Kenya Pipeline in a 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) outcome, with coach Munala lauding his trusted lieutenants led by skipper Mercy Moim as well as the youngsters led by school girl Terry Tata and setter Esther Mutinda who was crowned the playoffs Most Valuable Player (MVP) for fighting for this glory.
Meanwhile, former Kenyan international Denis Mokua who took over Prisons Kenya men’s team barely a month to the playoffs, replacing the long-serving prisons tactician David Lugh’aho delivered the side’s first title since 2006 when he was still in the playing unit.
Mokua says that the rebuilding process was over, arguing that the warders were ready to dominate.
“Our game plan worked and we kept fighting from the first to the last match. As we head to the new season, we are well aware that retaining the title will be that much difficult as every team is angling for the same title. However, the target is to bring back the dominance of yesteryears so we will keep the spirit going,” Mokua said after the side’s victory.
