Nigeria coach Rohr tips Burundi to qualify to second round
Nigeria coach has tipped Burundi to progress as one of the teams from the group
After laboring to beat them 1-0 on Saturday evening, Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr has tipped Burundi to come out of the group stages and progress to the round of 16, saying they are a good team.
Burundi who are making their debut in the competition had held Nigeria until the 76th minute when substitute Odion Ighalo found the back of the net.
“I said it yesterday that it will not be easy. I knew they are well organized and they showed today. It was difficult to beat them. I think this team is still able to come out of the group because they are a good side,” Rohr said after the match.
He acknowledged that second half subs bringing in Ahmed Musa and Ighalo proved the difference.
“We had planned to make them tired in the second half by circulating the ball quickly, and the presence of Musa and Ighalo changed the game for us. We pressured to get the goal and I think the second half performance was good,” the coach said.
Nigeria face Guinea in their second group match while Burundi will play fellow debutants Madagascar.
