Nairobi City Thunder etched their name in history, becoming the first Kenyan Basketball team to qualify for the prestigious Basketball Africa League (BAL). They achieved this milestone with a commanding 72 – 62 victory over Uganda’s City Oilers in the second semifinal at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Monday night.
The game began with the visitors taking an early 4 -2 lead through Parish Petty. However, Thunder quickly found their rhythm, ending the first quarter with an 18 – 11 lead. Their dominance continued in the second quarter, pulling ahead to a double digits advantage at 23 – 11. By halftime, Thunder maintained a solid lead of 34 – 26.
The third quarter saw the Oilers mount a spirited comeback, narrowing Thunder’s lead to a single point at 41-40 after a 6-0 scoring run. However, Thunder responded decisively, regaining control to lead 54 – 45 at the end of the quarter. In the final stretch, the Kenyan team, pushed by their loud fans held firm, securing a 72 – 62 victory and a historic ticket to BAL.
Thunder’s head coach Bradley Ibs praised his team’s effort after the match. “This is a proud moment for our team and our country. The players gave their all against a strong opponent, and their hard work paid off,” he said.
Team captain Tylor Ongwae emphasized the preparation behind their success. “We’ve worked tirelessly for three months to get here. The journey has been tough, but it’s worth it to make history for Kenya,” Ongwae said.
City Thunder qualified alongside Kriol Stars of Cape Varde, after the later defeated Urunani of Burundi 90 – 82 in the first semi final, with both teams meeting on Tuesday for the finals. Notably, this will be the first time the finalists have qualified for the competition.
