Musa Masika out of Emerging Stars’ trip to Rwanda

The national Under-20 football team will miss the services of speedy winger Musa Masika as they travel to Kigali for their 2019 CAF African Cup of Nations Under-20 return leg qualifier against hosts Rwanda on Saturday.

Masika picked up an injury in the first leg tie and was substituted in the second half. He is yet to hit 100 percent recovery and the coaches have seen it fit not to travel with him. However, head coach Staley Okumbi has included Kariobangi Shars forward Ovellah Ochieng and Mathare United striker John Mwangi in the squad.

Also included is Nzoia Sugar midfielder Patrick Otieno, Sharks keeper Bryan Bwire and Acakoro defender Brian Wepo.

“We have strengthened the striking force which was a bit blunt in the first leg and for me I think we have a very genuine chance to progress. We have trained very well and worked on the weak areas and I am optimistic we will progress,” Okumbi said.

He expects a tough tie from Rwanda but is optimistic his side will have enough to carry the day and book a second round slot.

“We know what to do to win despite the fact that we expect a very tough game from Rwanda. We saw what they are capable of doing in the first leg and we know how to counter that,” the coach noted.

The first leg in Machakos ended 1-1 and Kenya will need in the least a high scoring draw to progress on the away goal rule or an outright win. A 2-1 loss will see the game head to penalties.
