Malkia Strikers Coach Munala impressed with win against
Malkia Strikers coach Japheth Munala was left elated after the team managed their first ever win at the World Championships with a straight sets win over Kazakhstan on Saturday afternoon. The team managed their first ever victory and did it emphatically and Munala says this is just the start they wished for.
“I am very pleased with how we performed today and that we minimized our mistakes to win the game. We had prepared very well and our hard work has paid dividends. It is a great start and a historic result that will push us to do better,” the coach said after the match.
Malkia dominated the match despite falling behind at the start of the first and third sets and Munala says the determination within the squad pushed them to achieve the result.
His sentiments were shared by skipper Mercy Moim.
“This means a lot. It is our first time to win at a World Championship. We believed in ourselves and our training. Our coaches prepared us well. We played like normal against Kazakhstan and did what we do in practice,” she noted.
Setter Jane Wacu who played a pivotal role said; “This is history and we are glad to be part of it. Winning by straight sets made it even better for us.”
Kenya’s next match will be against Serbia on Sunday at 1pm, then face Puerto Rico on Monday. The girls need just two wins to qualify for the second round.
