Nominated MP Irene Mayaka today appeared before the Parliamentary Sports Committee to defend the Proposed Sports Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which aims to criminalize match fixing and other forms of sports manipulation in Kenya.

Mayaka emphasized the bill's urgency, describing it as a key step toward protecting the integrity of Kenyan sports and restoring public trust in local leagues.
“Earlier today, I was honored to appear before the Parliamentary Sports Committee to defend my proposed legislation, which seeks to criminalize sports manipulation, including match fixing,” she said.

She described the legislation as both progressive and necessary, citing the harmful effects of manipulation on athletes and the credibility of sporting competitions.
“Match fixing erodes trust, exploits athletes, and threatens the credibility of our leagues. This progressive legislation marks a crucial step in safeguarding the integrity of sports in Kenya.”

Mayaka also expressed gratitude to the committee for encouraging open and inclusive dialogue around the bill and stressed the importance of continued collaboration in reforming the sports sector.
“Grateful to the Committee for fostering inclusive dialogue. Together, we’re laying the foundation for a more transparent and accountable sports ecosystem. I look forward to continued efforts in strengthening integrity across all levels of sport.”

If passed, the amendment would introduce legal consequences for individuals and organizations involved in match manipulation, a move welcomed by stakeholders seeking greater accountability in Kenyan sports.
