The Rapids traded up to select Mayaka, 20, third overall out of Clemson in this year’s SuperDraft. The Kenyan was ACC Freshman of the Year in 2019, as well as first team all-ACC and second team All-America.
Kenyans will have to wait much longer to see Philip Mayaka in Major League Soccer action. The St. Anthony’s Kitale alum who was picked by Colorado Rapids during the 2021 MLS Super Draft is among five players loaned out to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, though the Rapids have the right to recall them.
Other players being loaned out to Colorado Springs are goalkeeper Abraham Rodriguez, defenders Sebastian Anderson and Michael Edwards, and forward Matt Hundley
“These loans will give Abe, Seb, Matt, Philip and Mike an opportunity to earn valuable playing time as they look to take the next step in their development,” Rapids executive Pádraig Smith said in a news release. “All five are young talents with great potential and who we believe can grow into successful players at the top level. This requires consistent playing time, however, so we’re pleased to be able to provide them with the opportunity to gain more experience through our partnership with Switchbacks FC.”
