Mathare United, the 2008 Kenya Premier League champions, have officially announced the addition of four players to their roster for the ongoing 2023/24 NSL season. The newcomers include Paul Were, Gideon Ogweno, Starlon Odhiambo, and Hilary Kiprotich, bringing the total number of signings during this mid-season window to 11, as confirmed by the club.

Were, a seasoned from Kenyan international with previous stints at Tusker, AFC Leopards, and various clubs across Africa and Europe, including Rayon Sport in Rwanda, brings invaluable experience to Mathare United. Having represented Kenya in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Were's presence is anticipated to bolster the team's efforts to reclaim a spot in the Premier League.

Expressing his delight upon rejoining Mathare after over a decade, Were emphasized his commitment to contributing goals and versatility to the team's quest for promotion. Despite initially anticipating a return to Europe, Were embraced Mathare's offer, prioritizing playing time over remaining a free agent.

Ogweno, a goalkeeper who previously played for Migori Youth, made his debut for Mathare United in their recent victory over Mombasa Elite. His clean sheet performance against the same opponents earlier in the season underscores his potential contribution to the team's defensive solidity.

Odhiambo, following in the footsteps of his father, former Mathare United defender Noah Abich, has joined as a left fullback from Kibera Black Stars. His inclusion adds depth to the defensive line, offering versatility and experience gained from facing Mathare United earlier in the season.

Kiprotich, a promising young midfielder, will initially feature in Mathare's youth team, reflecting the club's commitment to nurturing local talent.

Despite their relegation last season, Mathare United, under the guidance of coach Leonard Odipo, are poised for a return to the top flight, currently occupying the second position on 40 points, just two behind current leaders Naivas who are on 42.
