Malui powers NCPB to Super Cup final against Ulinzi
William Malui scored seven with Brian Walukhu and Robert Maraga adding five each as the millers dispensed Strathmore University 38-26 in the Cup semi final clash
National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) men's handball side are through to this year's Super Cup final.
William Malui scored seven with Brian Walukhu and Robert Maraga adding five each as the millers dispensed Strathmore University 38-26 in the Cup semi final clash played on Sunday May 28 at Nyayo.
Brian Mathews' charges played a huge first half, creating a nine-point advantage, heading to the break on 20-11 scoreline.
On resumption, Mamba mounted an unsuccessful comeback as the defending champions threw everything at them to finish comfortably and set a date with rivals Ulinzi.
In the other semi, Ulinzi HC taking on Black Mamba played for a 33-22 victory, setting yet another exciting final against holders NCPB.
While Mamba lost numerous scoring chances that would have turned the match in its head, the military side's keeper Duncan Kimutai made huge saves that kept the soldiers in the game with a lead.
Frank Kiplagat led Ulinzi's onslaught with nine goals as the Nixon Oyaro-coached side led by two goals at 16-14 at halftime with endurance and experience coming into play in the second half for the win.
Kimutai, who is playing in the Super Cup with the soldiers for the first time, says the team picked lessons from their 30-30 draw against NCPB in the last match of the just-concluded league and will use that to their advantage.
"All the focus has been on whichever match we are playing at the moment to remain focused. The two matches on Saturday were crucial but team work won it for us.
We now shift focus to the final. We are ready to fight for the Cup. The last time we played NCPB it ended in a draw but I believe we have what it takes to bag the win this time," Kimutai offered.
The final is slated for Thursday 1 June at Nyayo from 3.30 pm
