Malkia Strikers have broken camp this weekend to report to club duty as KVF prepares for the national league in Changamwe Mombasa
The Kenya Women Volleyball team (Malkia Strikers) have broken camp to allow the players to report to club duty in preparation for the volleyball national league set to take place in Changamwe, Mombasa on July 20-22.
The team has been in an intense training for four straight weeks at the Safaricom Indoor Arena gymnasium in preparation for 2018 FIVB World Championships slated for late September to late October in Japan.
The non-residential training has been led by coach Japheth Munala and his counterpart Josp Baraza, which saw their venue boosted from the basement to the gymnasium.
On Monday morning training coach Munala had said that the queens would break camp on Friday so that they can appear for their various clubs for the tournament that will take place at the Changamwe grounds
"We are now entering the fourth straight week of training. But the players will now break from the non-residential camp on Friday to attend to their Club duties," said coach Munala.
The head coach who is also doubling up as Kenya Pipeline coach added that they will be headed for Mombasa for the national league then come back to camp where they will know who makes to the 18-player provisional squad. This was after six were dropped from the initial 28 to make the current 22 in camp.
"Ultimately we want to have a minimum of 12 players and a maximum of 14. But this will be progressive. We started with 28, now we are at 22, we will probably go to 18 and finally the 12 or 14 that will travel to Japan. For now, we break for the league games but then after that, we will know,'' he said
