Outplayed, out-thought, out-scored, Harambee Stars were put to the sword in their 2022 FIFA World Cup Group E qualifying clash against Mali, crashing to a 5-0 defeat in Agadir, Morocco on Thursday 7 October 2021. Mali led 4-0 at the interval.

Ibrahima Kone was the destroyer in chief, grabbing a first half hat trick in between goals from Adama Traore and Moussa Doumbia.

Traore found the back of the net for the game’s opener after just seven minutes of play before Kone embarked on a twenty-three-minute hat-trick, scoring from open play in the 22nd and 36th minutes before adding his third and Mali’s fourth from the spot at the stroke of half time, signaling the end of a half that saw the Kenyans at sixes and sevens – Head Coach Engin Firat making early substitutions with Hassan Abdallah and Eric Zakayo coming on for Lawrence Juma and Joash Onyango who had a torrid time on the field of play.

Firat would then replace starting goalie Ian Otieno with Farouk Shikhalo for the second half.

These replacements did little to give Harambee Stars any meaningful impetus and they inevitably conceded a fifth goal, Doumbia finding the back of the net five minutes from time to see Mali claim the full time result and consolidate first place in the group with 7 points coming off 2 wins and 1 draw.

Stars and Mali face off in Nairobi on Sunday 10 October 2021.
